Configuring the domain-wide settings for hashtags
Overview
Hashtag management supports flexible governance by allowing administrators to control who can create, edit, delete, and apply hashtags across the network. Permission settings ensure hashtags remain consistent, meaningful, and aligned with organizational standards while still enabling participation where appropriate.

Hashtag Creation and Management Permissions
Hashtag creation and management permissions are controlled through a dedicated setting that defines which users can create, edit, delete, and apply hashtags. Network administrators always retain full hashtag permissions and cannot be restricted. Intranet administrators can be granted the same level of control when enabled, allowing them to manage hashtags across the domain.
Team administrators can also be granted full hashtag permissions, with scope limited to teams where they hold administrative rights. This includes creating hashtags directly from typeahead or through the Hashtag module. For more targeted access, administrators can assign permissions to specific users or user segments. User selection supports unlimited individual users and a limited number of network-level user segments, ensuring permissions are applied consistently across the organization without mixing team- or guest-based segments.
A global option allows all network users to manage hashtags without restriction. When enabled, this setting overrides and disables other role-based options to prevent conflicting permissions. When disabled, administrators can selectively grant access to intranet admins, team admins, or specific users and segments.
Hashtag Application Permissions
Hashtag application and removal are governed by a separate permission setting, allowing organizations to distinguish between users who can manage hashtags and those who can only apply them. Network administrators always retain permission to apply and remove hashtags. Intranet administrators can be granted platform-wide application rights, while team administrators can apply and remove hashtags only within teams they administer.
Specific users and user segments can be permitted to apply existing hashtags without being able to create or modify them. When users without creation permission attempt to reference a hashtag that does not exist, the text remains unformatted and is not converted into a hashtag. A global option allows all network users to apply and remove hashtags, overriding other application permissions when enabled.
Super Hashtag Permissions
Super Hashtag permissions follow the same structure and behavior as standard hashtag application controls. Network administrators always retain permission to apply Super Hashtags. Intranet administrators, team administrators, and specific users or segments can be granted application rights with the same scope rules as standard hashtags. A global option allows Super Hashtags to be applied by all network users when enabled, ensuring consistent permission behavior across hashtag types.
User Experience
Hashtag behavior adapts dynamically based on a user’s assigned permissions. Users with hashtag creation permission can create hashtags inline using the # symbol, view typeahead suggestions, and create new hashtags directly from supported content areas. The hashtag section remains visible across all supported content types, providing consistent access.
Users without creation permission but with application permission can apply existing hashtags using inline entry or selection. When an unknown hashtag is entered, it remains plain text. Hashtag fields remain visible, but options to create new hashtags are not shown.
Users with apply-only indication disabled experience hashtags strictly as plain text. Inline hashtag entry does not trigger suggestions or formatting, and hashtag sections are hidden across supported content types. Recognition core value hashtags remain unaffected by these permission settings and continue to function according to existing recognition behavior.
